Computing Group
In 2017, I established this research group to focus on creating cutting-edge computational solutions for visual data analysis. We create fully-automated methods, human-centric approaches, and hybrid human-machine partnerships for interpreting images, videos, and multimodal data, with an emphasis on meeting societal needs. Our work is relevant for a diversity of applications, including to improve upon the status quo for accessibility, (bio)medical data analysis, and privacy preservation. We frequently collaborate with partners from industry, medical campuses, and other academic institutions, while sharing our expertise with the broader community by publishing our findings and hosting workshops.
Research Themes
Partnering with domain experts to create computer vision technologies tailored for authentic use cases
Engaging humans in the loop so AI-based systems consistently deliver high-quality results
Locating and tracking content, using rectangles (detection) and detailed outlines (segmentation)
Featured Projects
Teaching machines to describe images with natural language and create new images

Prospective Students
My goal for individuals joining this group is to guide them to identify their dream jobs; arm them with the knowledge, skills, and community to make their dreams become a reality; and support them to make a positive social impact along the way. If you are interested in joining, please review this FAQ page first.
