Computing Group

In 2017, I established this research group to focus on creating cutting-edge computational solutions for visual data analysis.  We create fully-automated methods, human-centric approaches, and hybrid human-machine partnerships for interpreting images and videos, with an emphasis on meeting societal needs. Our work is relevant for a diversity of applications, including to improve upon the status quo for accessibility, (bio)medical data analysis, and privacy preservation.  We frequently collaborate with partners from industry, medical campuses, and other academic institutions, while sharing our expertise with the broader community through publishing our findings and hosting workshops.

Research Themes

Visual Intepretation for Blind People

Designing solutions with and for people who are blind that facilitate interpreting visual information

(Bio)medical Image and Video Analysis

Assisting (bio)medical teams to learn about biological processes as well as detect and treat diseases.

Visual Privacy Preservation

Empowering individuals to identify and manage any private content found in their images and videos

Hybrid Human-Machine Partnerships

Leveraging AI’s strengths to collect high-quality annotations with minimal human involvement

Dense Prediction

Locating content in images, either using rectangles (detection) or detailed outlines (segmentation)

Tracking

Following the movement of content in videos over time

Image Descriptions

Providing human-like interactions with visual content either by describing images or answering questions about images

Image Generation

Creating new images by modifying existing images to meet end users’ visual goals

Prospective Students

My goal for individuals joining this group is to guide them to identify their dream jobs; arm them with the knowledge, skills, and community to make their dreams become a reality; and support them to make a positive social impact along the way. If you are interested in joining, please review this FAQ page first.
